A Decade Of Growth

West Virginia United Health System

Created just 10 years ago, the West Virginia United Health System is today the state’s largest healthcare system and second largest private employer.

Our founding institutions,West Virginia University Hospitals and United Hospital Center, have been joined by City Hospital and Jefferson Memorial Hospital, collectively called WVU Hospitals – East, in the fast-growing eastern panhandle.

Last year we admitted more than 40,000 patients and treated some 140,000 others in our emergency departments. We provided charity care valued at $37 million.

We’ve saved our member hospitals millions of dollars and helped them improve their facilities and advance into high-tech medicine, enabling them to better serve their communities. All our hospitals are engaged in medical education and research.

We’re proud of the System’s first decade of achievement and look forward to many more years of service and leadership.

A special Thank You

...to two leaders who helped create and guide the System – WVU President David C. Hardesty, Jr., and WVU Vice President for Health Sciences Robert M. D’Alessandri, MD.

President Hardesty, as president of the WVUHS board, has provided wise and engaged leadership.

Dr. D’Alessandri has made inestimable contributions as a board member with a unique range of knowledge and experience. Both are stepping down at WVU and therefore leaving the WVUHS board. We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.
