Presentation to cover "The Mediating Effects of SNAP on Health Outcomes for Low-Income Households"
Public Health Dialogues will host Colleen Heflin, Ph.D., associate professor and Ph.D. program director at the Truman School of Public Affairs, University of Missouri-Columbia. She will present “The Mediating Effects of SNAP on Health Outcomes for Low-Income Households” at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in room 1905 of Health Sciences North. Doors open at noon. The series is free and open to the public.
Dr. Heflin will discuss the linkages between food insecurity, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) participation, health outcomes, patterns of SNAP benefit usage and monthly household food consumption. She will also cover the reasons why SNAP participants might be at higher risk for certain health conditions and how irregular food consumption among individuals with food-sensitive illnesses, such as diabetes, can lead to increased emergency room visits for health conditions such as hypoglycemia.
