WVU Hospitals, Garrett Regional Medical Center enter into management agreement

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC) has entered into a management agreement with WVU Hospitals effective January 1, 2018.

Through the current clinical affiliation, which went into effect in 2015, WVU Medicine-University Health Associates provides services in oncology, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, nephrology, neurology (telestroke), and laboratory on site at GRMC, and WVU Hospitals provides management services at GRMC’s Cancer Care and Infusion Services Center. As part of the new agreement, WVU Hospitals will manage and provide additional services and expertise at the Oakland, Maryland, based facility.

Our relationship has brought the WVU Cancer Institute and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute with cardiology and vascular services to the region,” Mark Boucot, president and CEO of GRMC, said. “Enhancing our relationship will continue the excellent progress that we have made and allow for even greater advancements in bringing specialty care to the community, so that people do not have to travel. The WVU Health System is expanding its medical services and capabilities very quickly, and we’re thrilled to be a part of such a great and emerging health system.”

In addition to his role as president and CEO of GRMC, Boucot will also serve as administrator of Potomac Valley Hospital, replacing outgoing CEO Linda Shroyer, who is retiring at the end of the year. This model mimics the current arrangement in the Eastern Panhandle, where Anthony P. Zelenka serves as president and CEO of both Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson. 

“Our arrangement in the Eastern Panhandle has worked really well and has brought those two hospitals together in a more meaningful way, and I thought we could take the same approach with Potomac Valley Hospital and Garrett Regional Medical Center,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the West Virginia University Health System, said. “Like Linda, Mark is an outstanding hospital administrator and just a great person with lots of energy, ideas, and enthusiasm. I think he’s a perfect fit for this role.”
 
Boucot will assume his new role in January.

He previously served in a variety of senior leadership positions at several hospitals in Maryland and New Jersey, including MedStar Saint Mary’s Hospital, Mercy Health Services, Our Lady of Lourdes Health System, Southern Ocean County Hospital, and Kessler Memorial Hospital. He’s a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board – Region 3, chairman of the board of directors for the Maryland Rural Health Association, and serves on several community boards, including the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and the Garrett County Economic Development Corporation. He also has a master’s degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Boucot moved to Oakland in December 2013, when he took over the helm at GRMC.

GRMC is a 55-bed, not-for-profit, acute care facility with a long history of serving the healthcare needs of Garrett County, Maryland, and the surrounding communities in West Virginia. It includes a four-bed Intensive Care Unit, a 10-bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit, family-centered Maternity Suite, and a 13-bed Outpatient Surgical Unit with a four-bed Surgical Suite. With a staff of 400 professionals, GRMC is one of Garrett County’s largest employers.

Potomac Valley Hospital (PVH) is a 25-bed critical access facility, employing more than 200 healthcare professionals, including about 50 physicians from the surrounding community who have privileges to provide care. PVH has a staff of emergency medicine physicians who provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week in its Emergency Room. It officially became a member of the WVU Medicine-West Virginia University Health System in 2014.
