WVU Public Health faculty to be celebrated during Research Week 2019
The West Virginia University Office of the Provost and the WVU Research Office are hosting the University’s inaugural Research Week 2019, April 1-5, 2019, to honor the high volume and caliber of WVU research. Four faculty members from the School of Public Health are participating in celebratory events during the week.
On Monday, April 1, Bob Duval, Ph.D. – a professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management, and Leadership – will present during Academic Media Day on Climate Change. His presentation, “When the Levee Breaks and Other Tales of Public Health in a Changing Climate,” will be at 2:10 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center. Academic Media Day provides regional media professionals the opportunity to learn more about the expertise of WVU faculty and researchers.
On Wednesday, April 3, three faculty members will be honored for their long-form scholarship during an invitation-only celebration. The event recognizes faculty and researchers who have published a book; produced a CD, documentary or app; or completed some other piece of long-form scholarship or creative work in the previous calendar year.
Michael McCawley, Ph.D. – a clinical associate professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences – will be honored for his work on “Monitoring and Sampling Approaches to Assess Underground Coal Mine Dust Exposures,” a 2018 report for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
A congressional request in the fiscal 2016 Congressional Appropriations directed the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to form an ad hoc committee, of which McCawley was a member, to assess monitoring and sampling approaches for informing underground coal mine operators’ decision making regarding the control of RCMD and mine worker exposure.
For the third year in a row Lauri Andress, Ph.D., J.D. – an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management, and Leadership – will be recognized for her a six-minute video depicting the non-medical structural barriers to population health. “Structural Barriers to Population Health in West Virginia: A Community-Based Video” features interviews, footage and photographs from community members and covers three communities in West Virginia including Preston County’s seniors and food access issues; Charleston’s neighborhood built environment issues, and Monongalia County’s transportation issues.
Erik Carlton, Dr. PH. – associate dean for professional programs and associate professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management, and Leadership – will be honored for “Leadership for Public Health: Theory and Practice,” a textbook he co-authored with James W. Holsinger Jr. M.D., chancellor emeritus and professor emeritus at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health. The textbook provides a detailed discussion of leadership theory with examples and cases specific to the field of public health.
