64-Slice Cardiac CT Scan
A revolution in the early detection of heart problems

The WVU Heart Institute uses a 64-Slice CT Scanner to provide detailed images of the heart’s anatomy and coronary circulation. Not only can this technology detect potential heart problems before patients experience symptoms, but for some patients, the scan will be the first step in the prevention of a heart attack.

Pictures produced by the scanner are incredibly sharp and lifelike — and show the human heart in all its complicated detail. Yet the process is faster than getting a studio photo — usually five to 13 seconds. The machine takes up to 200 pictures per second, which are then processed in a computer to generate 3-D images that can be viewed from any angle.

The device, one of only a few in the region, can also aid in the diagnosis of aneurysms, circulation problems, and diseases of the lungs, liver, and other internal organs.
