WVU Neurology

Research & Education

Complementing the Department of Neurology's clinical programs is an extensive research program.

ResearchAs members of an academically based department, our neurology staff lead a wide range of basic and clinical studies ultimately aimed at improving patient care. Ongoing studies include the pharmacological treatment and prevention of stroke; pharmacological and surgical treatment, and prevention, of epilepsy and other seizure disorders; pharmacological therapy for neuromuscular diseases and movement disorders; the long-term efficacy of different pharmacological treatments for migraine; drug treatment for Alzheimer's disease; and imaging techniques for early diagnosis of neurological disease.

Our physician researchers receive support for these and many other studies from the National Institutes of Health, the Health Resources Services Administration, and a number of private foundations.

Education and Training
As part of our commitment to ensuring optimal patient care, the Department of Neurology offers many training opportunities to students and residents.

Our active clinical programs and numerous treatment clinics provide students and residents the opportunity to combine didactic learning with real experience. Neurology faculty members teach in small groups, which help promote learning by establishing a friendly and open relationship between faculty and students.

Residents can choose between a wide variety of ACGME-approved programs, including neurology, neurology/psychiatry, clinical neurophysiology, neuropathology and internal medicine/neurology.
