Stroke Intervention

Stroke is third-leading cause of death in the United States, with over 700,000 episodes annually.

WVU neurologists are trained to recognize the earliest symptoms, and to initiate treatment aimed at reducing the potentially devastating effects of stroke.

Our neurologists are members of the WVU Stroke Center, which comprises a multidisciplinary team of experts including neurosurgeons, radiologists and emergency-medicine physicians.

This team provides comprehensive care to stroke patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. West Virginia University Hospitals is designated a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations.

Computed Tomography (CT) screening is a standard part of triage for all stroke patients at WVU's Ruby Memorial Hospital, where doctors are using innovative diagnostic techniques and treatments to help increasing numbers of stroke patients to resume normal lives.

Patients entering with symptoms of a stroke are rapidly assessed with a trio of tests, including CT scan, angiography and perfusion, which then guide the choice of treatment.

The WVU Stroke Center cares for patients in the tri-state region.
