Julian E. Bailes, MD — Department Chairman
Dr. Julian Bailes, department chairman, is a specialist in cerebrovascular surgery, sports injuries and telemedicine. His research includes a study sponsored by the National Football League Players Association on head injuries among professional football players; team physicians frequently consult him for his expertise in this area. Dr. Bailes received his medical degree from Louisiana State University and completed his residency and advanced training at Northwestern University in Chicago and the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. He led the cerebrovascular surgery program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1988 to 1997.
Warren W. Boling, Jr., MD
A specialist in the surgical treatment of epilepsy, Dr. Warren Boling received his medical degree from Texas Tech University and completed advanced training at the University of Kentucky, and at McGill University in Canada and the University of Melbourne in Australia. He came to WVU from the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute, a world-renowned center for the surgical treatment of epilepsy.
Larry V. Carson, MD
Dr. Larry V. Carson is trained and board certified in both neurosurgery and in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He specializes in complex spine and craniofacial surgery. Dr. Carson earned his medical degree and completed advanced training at the Medical College of Georgia-Augusta. He was a recipient of the prestigious Van Wagenen Fellowship for advanced training in craniofacial, skull base, and reconstructive surgery in Paris, France.
John J. Collins, MD
Dr. John J. Collins is an expert in the neurosurgical care of children and adolescents. Prior to joining WVU, he was chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Lorna Linda University, and chief of neurosurgery at two major U.S. Navy hospitals. His specialties include skull-base techniques, spinal instrumentation, and the surgical application of advanced digital imaging technologies.
Takanori Fukushima, MD
Dr. Takanori Fukushima is a world-renowned pioneer in microsurgery, minimally invasive neurosurgery techniques, and skull-base surgery, and the inventor of many new neurosurgical techniques and instruments. He also specializes in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, acoustic neuromas and cerebral aneurysms. Dr. Fukushima received his medical degree from the University of Tokyo, and completed advanced training at the University of Tokyo, the Free University of Berlin, and the Mayo Clinic.
Terrence D. Julien, MD
Dr. Julien is a surgical neuro-oncologist, a neurosurgeon who diagnoses and treats patients who have tumors of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. He also performs spinal surgeries for a variety of problems unrelated to cancer. He is experienced in radiosurgery, a procedure which uses radiation to treat tumors, facial pain, and other functional brain disorders. He also has advanced training in molecular neuro-oncology, spinal column metastasis and complex spine surgery. His specialty interests include brain tumors, computer-assisted image-guided neurosurgery, and radiosurgery. His spinal surgery interests are in cervical spine disorders (particular cervical disc disease, spondylosis, and myelopathy), spine tumors, and minimally invasive spine procedures (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar).
Dr. Julien joins WVU from Togus VA Medical Center in Maine. He earned his medical degree from Howard University. He completed specialty training at the New York University Medical Center and at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He was fellowship-trained in neurosurgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and at the University of South Florida’s H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Julien is working on novel techniques to treat malignant primary and metastatic brain tumors using immunotherapy, radiosensitizers and nanotechnology.
Bengt Karlsson, M.D., Ph.D.
Bengt Karlsson is an internationally renowned specialist in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Dr. Karlsson, of Sweden, has over 16 years experience with the instrument and has worked on more than 2,000 cases. He served as head of the Gamma Knife Center at Goethe University Frankfurt in Frankfurt, Germany, before coming to WVU. His Gamma Knife training began in 1987 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he served as co-director of the Gamma Knife Center. Dr. Karlsson has been extensively published and is a visiting consultant at hospitals and institutions in the U.S., Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Korea, Taiwan, and Germany.
G. Robert Nugent, M.D.
Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department, Dr. Nugent is internationally known for his treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. He travels extensively to teach his techniques for trigeminal neuralgia and neurosurgical treatment of pain.
Michael Oh, M.D.
Dr. Michael Oh treats chronic pain, Parkinson's Disease, pituitary tumors, spinal cord Injuries, and Tic Douloureux. He is involved in research in Deep Brain Stimulation and Image-Guided/Computed Assisted Surgery.
Charles L. Rosen, MD, PhD — Director of Research
Dr. Charles L. Rosen, director of the department's research program, also has expertise in skull- base surgery, spinal cord tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, and complex spine surgery. His research centers on new ways to improve stroke outcomes and to diagnose and treat brain tumors and injuries. Dr. Rosen received his medical degree and PhD from New York University and advanced training at George Washington University.
Joseph L. Voelker, MD
Joseph L. Voelker, MD has experience in a wide range of neurosurgical disorders and procedures, specializing in the neurosurgical treatment of aneurysms and AVMs, pituitary tumors and acoustic neurinoma. He received his medical degree from Indiana University and completed advanced training at Indiana University and the University of Western Ontario.
