Treatment and Recovery

WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Services

Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry provides hope in the Appalachian region for patients ranging from children to elderly adults dealing with a range of emotional and psychological issues, including substance use and addiction. Our programs provide a continuum of care through outpatient, partial hospitalization, inpatient and residential treatment services.

WVU Collegiate Recovery Program

The WVU Collegiate Recovery Program supports students in recovery by promoting a healthy, balanced and meaningful life on campus. Through activities centered around health, wellness, adventure, community, service, and fun, the goal of the program is to provide the support and resources necessary for students to thrive in their recovery and develop meaning and purpose as they move forward in life.

WVU Carruth Center

The Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services provides a variety of short-term counseling, psychological and outreach services. The Student Assistance Program offers an array of services for students with alcohol or other drug concerns, including individual assessment, individual counseling, psychoeducational groups and online educational activities.

WV PEERS

WV PEERS—a collaborative program between WVU and several community partners—uses peer recovery coaches to increase access to treatment for people who have substance use disorder. By taking into account the barriers to recovery that individuals face—such as hunger, unreliable childcare or lack of social support—the program makes participants more likely to enter into and continue with treatment.

Education & Prevention

WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities

The WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities and its partners launched IMPACT WV to improve the quality of services to reduce health disparities of children impacted by substance use. IMPACT WV is working with communities to create opportunities and address needs of children diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) or exposed to substances in utero.

WELLWVU

WELLWVU delivers comprehensive wellness education to all WVU students. Their work is based on the latest in prevention research and they are committed to best practices in health education and evaluation. WELLWVU alcohol and other drugs programs aim to increase students’ knowledge of protective factors to keep them safe and decrease negative consequences.

GameChanger

University Relations at West Virginia University has facilitated the production of two Opioid Abuse and Awareness Summit events for GameChanger. The youth-led prevention, peer-to-peer influence, positive youth development and community enhancement organization is designed to educate, support and empower West Virginia’s teens to make healthy choices and become leaders, and to build school environments which prevent student opioid and other drug use before it starts.

HELP4WV

HELP4WV offers a 24/7 call, chat and text line that provides immediate help for any West Virginian struggling with an addiction or mental health issue. The helpline staff offers confidential support and resource referrals, including self-help groups, out- patient counseling, medication-assisted treatment, psychiatric care, emergency care and residential treatment. The helpline provides assistance for those who need help themselves, and guidance for those seeking help for loved ones.

Children's Crisis & Referral Line

Available 24/7, HELP4WV’s Children’s Crisis & Referral Line offers connections to the most appropriate and available treatment for an array of youth behavioral health needs, from parenting support to immediate crisis response.

Help & Hope WV

A comprehensive website for fighting addiction, Help & Hope WV provides resources to patients, prescribers and community leaders addressing substance use disorder in West Virginia. The site includes resources aimed at youth prevention, opioid overdose and prevention, communities and first responders, access to treatment and support, and information about medication disposal.

Jobs & Hope West Virginia

Jobs & Hope West Virginia is a program offering support through a statewide collaboration of agencies that provide West Virginians in recovery the opportunity to obtain career training and to ultimately secure meaningful employment.

CHESS Connections for Recovery

Through a partnership between West Virginia University and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, anyone struggling with substance use can access CHESS Health’s Addiction Management Platform, which uses evidence-based technology to aid in intervention, treatment and recovery and beyond. The free smartphone app was made available for West Virginia residents searching for connection while struggling with substance use disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Office of Drug Control Policy

In 2017, the Office of Drug Control Policy was created within the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources with the purpose of improving drug overdose surveillance and helping strengthen the response. The Office supports initiatives and provides information for patients, family and friends, providers and first responders.

Bureau for Behavioral Health

The mission of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Behavioral Health is to ensure that West Virginians with mental health or substance use disorders experience services that are comprehensive, readily accessible and tailored to meet individual, family and community needs.

Local Health Departments

West Virginia's 55 counties are served by 49 local boards of health charged with protecting the health and safety and promoting the interest of the citizens of West Virginia. Local boards of health provide services through local health departments located in all 55 counties.

National Resources

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities.

National Institute on Drug Abuse

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is the lead federal agency supporting scientific research on drug use and its consequences. The mission of the organization is to advance science on the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health.

ScreenU Rx

ScreenU Rx is a web-based program that utilizes the principles of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment to identify and intervene with students who are engaging in risky prescription drug behaviors. ScreenU is a program offered by the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery.
