Students encouraged to apply for Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Global Travel Awards, deadline Dec. 14

Applications are now open for a travel grant offered by the West Virginia University Health Sciences Global Engagement Office (GEO), which provides funding for students to engage in various global health initiatives.

The Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Global Travel Award provides up to five awards of $1,000 each to eligible students enrolled in WVU Health Sciences degree programs to support expenses related to global health field placements or experiences, while also providing them with an introductory approach to healthcare-related or community-based research projects.

Applications are open to any full-time undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in a WVU Health Sciences degree program.

Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, strong leadership skills and should be able to provide evidence or potential evidence of the impact of their work.

Preference will be given to students who have not participated in global experiences previously, who would not be able to participate in a global experience without this funding, are enrolled in programs currently considered to be relatively underrepresented in global health activities and do not offer other sources of support for such experiences or are first-generation university students.

All applicants are required to submit a completed application consisting of the following:

  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A statement that includes the academic and professional background of the applicant, specific interests and career goals and a summary of how the applicant will use the scholarship if selected. Statement must be a maximum of one page with 12-point font and one-inch margins.
  • Two written recommendations, submitted electronically by the recommenders, from individuals familiar with the academic performance and achievements of the applicant, as well as actual and/or potential professional impact on their field of study. One of the recommendations must be from a WVU Health Sciences faculty member within the department where the applicant is receiving instruction.
  • A summary of the purpose for studying abroad in a target country

Completed applications should be submitted electronically to Cindy Stankos, executive assistant for Global Engagement at WVU Health Sciences, at cynthia.stankos@wvumedicine.org by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
