Medical Student Service Program
Who is eligible?
West Virginia University School of Medicine students that intend to enter a primary care practice in West Virginia.
Obligation to Practice in West Virginia
- Service program recipients receive $25,000 for each year of commitment for up to 4 years ($100,000 Total)
- Students who are awarded service program funding must sign a contract and practice full-time (32-40 hours per week) for a minimum of one year for each year of funding at an eligible site located in a rural and/or underserved area of the state. - Other areas to fulfill obligation requirements will be considered on a case by case basis
- Students are responsible for locating a practice site and must agree to provide medical services to West Virginia Medicaid and CHIP recipients
- Failing to fulfill the service obligation results in repayment of the service program funds with interest
Submission Guidelines
Service program application packets include student application, two recommendation forms and Certification of Education Status. The 2024-2025 service program application is now open. The application must be completed by February 7, 2025. Awards will be made March 2025.
Eligibility for Other Financial Incentive
Students who are awarded Medical Service program funding from the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health may also qualify for other financial incentives for rural practice in West Virginia. In some cases, the service obligations can be met concurrently.
