Alcohol Abuse

Dr. Daniel Shook has been the catalyst behind the development of a community-based sobering center for preventing human and financial costs associated acute public intoxication. The Morgantown sobering center is currently in the planning phases. The center will target high alcohol consumption individuals that congregate in high alcohol density outlet areas of downtown Morgantown, which is adjacent to a major university. Dr. Shook provides evidence and technical assistance to the group of stakeholders interested in developing this sobering center. He facilities a collaborative of social service agencies, municipal, county and university law enforcement departments, collegiate recovery services, county health department, WV legislators and clinical services in the development of evidence-based protocols to decrease alcohol-related injuries. Dr. Shook provides data and evidence-based prevention strategies to the WV state alcohol control agency, local city councils and their respective legal offices for the development of policies to reduce alcohol-harm behaviors.
