Focused on eating better, getting fit, and reducing stress in 2022? Join the WVU Medicine Finding Wellness program and learn
about making better choices, says Gwen Emery, MD, director of the WVU Medicine program.
“More than an abrupt change in diet or exercise, Finding Wellness is a way to gradually incorporate elements of a healthy lifestyle into our daily lives until making better choices becomes a way of life,” she said.
Now in its fifth year, the free program is not only targeted to the general public but to WVU Medicine employees, who can earn points toward the Wellness Rewards Program and save on their 2023 medical plan premium surcharges.
The eight-week program will offer sessions on the following topics:
-
Cooking Demo — Learn how easy and delicious healthy cooking can be and taste test multiple new foods.
-
Finding Fitness — Link physical and mental benefits of exercises, and practice a variety of movement.
-
Making S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals — Assess your motivation level and identify positive/negative influences on your success.
-
Menu Planning — Learn meal planning strategies and add/substitute healthier foods.
-
Mindful Eating — Recognize what mindless eating looks and feels like, and identify emotional, environmental, and physical triggers.
-
Portion Distortion — Learn how to understand food labels, and recognize common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
-
Stress Management — Recognize stress and unhealthy coping habits and learn ways to quiet the mind.
-
Supermarket Safari — Acquire skills to shop healthier by comparing labels and prices.
Enrollment is underway for the next two sessions. The session that begins Tuesday, March 1, has limited space available; however, there are many open spots in the session that kicks off Tuesday, April 26.
The sessions are being offered virtually, as well as in-person. Contact Ann Durham at ann.durham@hsc.wvu.edu or 304-293-2604 to sign up. Participants will be asked to provide their name, height, weight, date of birth, and have their A1C checked at the beginning and end of the series.
