Red Cross seeks licensed healthcare professionals

The WVU Center for Community Engagement has teamed up with the American Red Cross Central Appalachia Region to share volunteer opportunities that allow licensed healthcare professionals to make an impact on local communities and the state.

Healthcare professionals at WVU Medicine are uniquely qualified to be a Red Cross Disaster Health Services volunteer. Volunteer licenses are also available for retirees.

Volunteers address unmet disaster-related health needs of impacted individuals, families, and communities. They help by:

  • Providing hands-on care within an RN-led model
  • Providing health assessments and guidance to clients
  • Providing replacement of medication, durable medical equipment, glasses, dentures and other medical supplies (items lost in disaster)
  • Supporting individuals with disabilities and functional and access needs
  • Supplementing the community healthcare delivery system if needed

To learn more, the Center invites employees to join an upcoming virtual informational session hosted by the American Red Cross. In the session, Red Cross workers will discuss how healthcare professionals can help those impacted by disaster. Current disaster health services volunteers speak about their experiences, how to get involved, and answer any questions. The session is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
