South Charleston High’s varsity football team kicked off the first game of the season Thursday Aug. 27, in new Ridell Axiom helmets, which came to the team through a partnership between WVU Medicine’s Thomas Foundation, the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, the high school and Riddell, which manufacturers the helmets.
The technology used in the new helmets is designed to keep users safer by helping coaches identify where players are taking the most hits and addressing unsafe techniques.
WVU Medicine Neurology Chairman Dr. Javier Cardenas, an expert in sports neurology, said the system can flag potentially dangerous contact, such as a player leading with the crown of their helmet.
