WVU researchers collaborate on article in Journal of Adolescent Health

Researchers at West Virginia University Health Sciences recently collaborated on an article analyzing tobacco use and oral health in adolescents. The study was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Titled “Longitudinal Analysis of Tobacco Use and Oral Health in Adolescents: Findings from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study,” the article was co-authored by WVU School of Dentistry faculty member R. Constance Wiener, DMD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health and Professional Practice, and WVU School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics members Noor Abdulhay, PhD, recent graduate, Sijin Wen, PhD, professor, Bethany Barone Gibbs, PhD, chair, and Ruchi Bhandari, PhD, associate professor.

The rise in electronic cigarettes and the dual use of e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco products was examined by the group to determine the association with oral health outcomes. The research found that dual use significantly increased the risk for developing dental health issues than no tobacco use, highlighting the importance of early intervention and prevention.

The Journal of Adolescent Health is multidisciplinary scientific journal dedicated to improving the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults.
