CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Excellence in medical education continues to thrive at CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine, and the Office of Student Services at the West Virginia University School of Medicine – Charleston Campus is proud to recognize the physicians and educators whose commitment to teaching has made a profound impact on the next generation of healthcare professionals.
"We all know CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine is full of exceptional clinicians, scholars, and teachers," said Preston Seaberg, M.D., Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education WVU School of Medicine Charleston Campus. "This year, we decided to quantify that excellence through student evaluations. While the results did not surprise us, they reinforced our tremendous pride in the educational experiences being created for our students every day."
Inaugural Educator “High Five” Recognition
The Charleston Campus is pleased to announce the inaugural cohort of recipients of the Educator “High Five” Recognition, honoring educators who achieved a perfect cumulative educator performance rating of 5.0 out of 5.0 during the 2025–2026 academic year and were evaluated by at least five students.

Departmental Teaching Distinction
In addition to individual recognitions, the Charleston Campus evaluated teaching excellence across departments. A weighted average educator rating was calculated for each department using faculty members who were evaluated by at least five students during the academic year.
Following an exceptionally competitive assessment, the 2025–2026 Departmental Teaching Distinction is awarded to the Department of Surgery, which achieved an outstanding pooled average educator performance rating of 4.96 out of 5.0.
Charleston Campus Educators of the Year
Some educators demonstrate an impact that extends beyond individual learners, influencing an entire class through exceptional teaching, mentorship, and the creation of a learning environment in which students can flourish.
To identify these extraordinary educators, the Charleston Campus developed a composite Educational Impact Score incorporating both educator performance ratings and the number of student evaluators.
