Heidi Zbosnik, RN, a faith community nurse from Taylor County, recently organized a women’s health event for her community during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Emphasizing the importance of proactive care, the event educated women about early detection, self-exams, and available resources for screenings.

Through the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing program at West Virginia University School of Nursing, Zbosnik became equipped to integrate health and wellness education into her faith community setting, bridging the gap between physical health and faith-based support.
Her October event featured interactive sessions, educational materials, and opportunities for women to ask questions in a safe, supportive environment.
“I wanted to create a space where women feel empowered to take charge of their health while staying connected to their faith,” Zbosnik said. “Breast health is so important, and awareness can truly save lives.”
Dr. Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the WVU School of Nursing, has been a strong advocate for faith community nursing initiatives throughout West Virginia and beyond.
“Heidi exemplifies what faith community nursing is all about — meeting people where they are and providing compassionate, evidence-based care,” Smothers said. “Her work in Taylor County is making a real difference.”
Through her leadership and commitment, Zbosnik is helping to ensure that health education becomes a vital part of spiritual life in Taylor County, fostering a healthier and more informed community.
