Dr. Sheldon Teperman is currently Professor of Surgery at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Trauma Medical Director at the NYC Health & Hospitals – Jacobi Hospital’s ACS Level One Trauma Center. Jacobi is part of the NYC Health and Hospitals Public Hospital System, the largest in the nation. He is the System Trauma Medical Director for Health and Hospitals. New York City owns and operates these iconic trauma centers that includes names like Bellevue, Harlem, and Kings County. He also has a leading role in relevant government state and local trauma steering committees. Nationally he is known for his work on disaster management, gun violence research/ advocacy, and implementation of new technologies, e.g. REBOA.

The Covid-19 pandemic surge in New York City became the most devastating in the nation; 30,000 citizens died within 50 miles of the city. Because of the illness of many of the senior hospital leadership Dr. Teperman became the Surgery Department’s Leader of the Covid response. At the Pandemic’s height he oversaw/directed the running of 5 and sometimes 6 Covid Surgical ICU’s. Between the deployed military, the emergency national agency nursing, the various university residency programs, and the Jacobi faculty, this was an effort of many 100’s of providers and allied health care professionals. Because of his position in leadership in NYC, both in Trauma and Critical care, he advised the City’s health care leaders on its protocols, ventilator allocation, and many other critical issues related to the pandemic. Dr. Teperman also used various professional social media outlets and appeared on both 60 Minutes and CNN to communicate with, and help inform, the nation about the surge in New York City.
