Accreditation renewed for state’s only oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program

Accreditation renewed for state’s only oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program

The West Virginia University School of Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program successfully earned reaccreditation through the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

The department was developed in 1961 and is the oldest residency program at the dental school.
The accreditation review in March resulted in no recommendations or suggestions.

The process of accreditation ensures residents, the dental profession, specialty boards and the public that accredited training programs are compliant with published standards.

Accreditation is based on six main standards covering the following:

  • institutional commitment and program effectiveness
  • program director and teaching staff
  • facilities and resources
  • curriculum and program duration
  • advanced dental education residents' eligibility and selection
  • research

The residency program has earned reaccreditation 13 times and the  most recent designation is effective July 1, 2022 through June 20, 2027.
