Attendees at WVU Day at the Legislature learn how to locate a heartbeat on SAM

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — The West Virginia University School of Nursing hosted an interactive booth Jan. 30 at the West Virginia Capitol, inviting WVU Day at the Legislature attendees to learn how to locate a heartbeat on the Student Auscultation Manikin (SAM).

Dr. Theresa Cowan and Kathy Atassi led heartbeat demonstrations Jan. 30 during WVU Day at the Legislature.

Dr. Theresa Cowan, Charleston Campus Chair, and Kathy Atassi, an assistant nursing professor, led the heartbeat demonstrations. In addition to disposable stethoscopes, folks who visited the nursing booths could also receive WVU Nursing pens, stickers and program information.

“My favorite part of the event is getting to interact with students and seeing the various counties represented at the event,” Cowan said. “I love talking to students who have an interest in nursing but then after working with the simulation manikin, seeing it spark even more enthusiasm in them.”

Atassi especially enjoys helping the younger attendees locate SAM’s heartbeat.

“I love seeing the kids listen to SAM and watch their faces light up in awe and amazement of what a heart actually sounds like,” Atassi said. “Then they get to take their stethoscopes home and play with them and practice on themselves and their family.”

Our Beckley Campus was also represented during the event by Chair Hillary Parcell and lecturer Kelley Coleman, who shared program information and talked with attendees about a degree in nursing.

Hosted by WVU and WVU Extension, the free event welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy hands-on activities and learn more about educational opportunities across WVU. This year’s event highlighted areas of opportunity for workforce development, economic prosperity, health care and youth programming.
