Barbour County nurses invited to train as Faith Community Nurses

WVU School of Nursing is seeking nurses from Barbour County to complete the national Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course and to build a nurse-led program in their faith communities.

Funding is available to cover the cost of the course, which focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community.

Supplies will be provided for the trained nurses to start a local nurse-led program within their faith communities. Two nurses will also be provided a stipend for their work in building the program.

“West Virginia is one of the most rural states in the nation, making nurse-led access to care points within communities an important part of the efforts to improve health-related outcomes,” said Dr. Angel Smothers, director of the Faith Community Nursing program.

Smothers will host a Q&A session June 21 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in attending can register online.

This effort to improve access to nurse-led care is being supported by the Pallottine Foundation of Buckhannon as part of their 2023-24 Healthy Communities Initiative. Their gift was awarded via the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
