Casey to lead Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences

The West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences has named Brian Casey, M.D., the new department chair, effective March 29, 2024.

“WVU’s commitment to improving healthcare for women throughout the region helped draw me to this role,” Dr. Casey said. “The patient-first approach to care is a foundation of my own work history of maximizing care operations to provide equitable, high-quality and evidence-based healthcare. I look forward to working with the talented leadership team at WVU and WVU Medicine to continue building on their success.”

Casey joins WVU from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he’s held numerous leadership roles, including the vice chair of Obstetrics, division director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, assistant program director of the MFM Fellowship, alternate principal investigator for the Eunice Kennedy-Shriver NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, and the interim director of the Obstetric Medical Complications Clinic.

Before his time in Alabama, Casey served as MFM division director, MFM fellowship director at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, principal investigator for the Dallas MFMU Network site, and as chief of Obstetrics for Parkland Health and Hospital System in Texas. Dr. Casey also serves as an editor of Williams Obstetrics.

“Dr. Casey brings not only a wide range of clinical care experience but a targeted approach to continuing to build on our already successful research and training programs,” Clay Marsh, M.D., chancellor and executive dean for Health Sciences, said. “We’re honored to welcome him to our Mountaineer family.”

Casey completed his fellowship in MFM at UT Southwestern/Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas, Texas, and his residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. He received his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine.

Casey will fill the position currently held by Allison Suttle, M.D., MBA, who has been serving as interim chair of the department since July 2022 and will focus on her full-time position as WVU Health System’s chief quality officer.
