Dental school professor will have input on ADA continuing education standards

Beginning this fall, a West Virginia University School of Dentistry department chair and faculty member will have a seat on an American Dental Association board that provides continuing education input for providers.

Dr. Arif Salman will represent the American Academy of Periodontology on the ADA’s Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR). He is one of ten board members who will serve as a representative of a dental specialty organization.

Dr. Salman’s four-year term begins in October 2022 at the American Dental Association House of Delegates meeting.

According to the ADA , board members are responsible for establishing continuing dental education recognition standards and for reviewing and approving providers of continuing dental education.

“It is an honor to be invited to represent the American Academy of Periodontology at the ADA’s Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR) program. I’m grateful for the support extended by Dean Pachuta and the School of Dentistry leadership team. I’m looking forward to representing both the academy and WVU dental school in this important role,” Salman said.

The primary duties of the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition are to:

  • Formulate and adopt requirements, guidelines and procedures for the recognition of continuing dental education providers.
  • Approve providers of continuing dental education programs and activities.
  • Provide a means for continuing dental education providers to appeal adverse recognition decisions.
  • Submit an annual report to the House of Delegates of the American Dental Association and interim reports, on request.
  • Submit an annual budget to the Board of Trustees of the Association.
