Dr. Susan Newfield recognized for 35 years at WVU School of Nursing

The School of Nursing is recognizing Dr. Susan Newfield, PhD, APRN, PMHCNS-BC, for her 35-year tenure in nursing education at West Virginia University.

Newfield, Associate Professor, Emerita, began her career with the WVU School of Nursing in January 1990 to pursue her intellectual curiosity.

“What better place to work with curious people than in academia,” Newfield said. “I appreciate the intellectual energy and curiosity of my colleagues. Interacting with fellow faculty and inquisitive students in the classroom provides an environment that fosters questioning, inquires, challenging assumptions, and formulating new answers.”

Throughout the years, Newfield said she has found the WVU School of Nursing to be “a rich environment” for learning and sharing with one another.

“This opportunity to inquire has broadened in breadth through the School of Nursing’s Global Health Program. Building capacity through global exchange with university faculty, students, and an INGO in Viet Nam where I have worked for 20 years has enriched my academic experience and the learning environment in the School of Nursing.”

Newfield said international exchanges between the faculty and students from many global locations results in intellectual exchange and academic enrichment.

For Newfield, working somewhere with a vibrant nursing environment, having opportunities for collaboration with fellow faculty and international partners, and striving for excellence for nursing students is what she finds most rewarding about her work.

“This translates into high quality nursing education, and it is exhilarating to be part of that.”

Her role at WVU also enables her to continue practicing in the field. Newfield works as a Psych Mental Health Clinical Specialist in a local high school, providing an essential component to adolescent health.

“In my professional life, my clinical practice informs my teaching, and my teaching informs clinical practice. Like Yin and Yang, they inform, deepen, balance, and strengthen each other.”
