Graduating WVU medical students make their match, learn residency placements
The futures were sealed for 115 West Virginia University medical students who opened their envelopes to learn their residency placements for the next three to seven years during the School of Medicine’s National Residency Match celebration on Friday, March 21.
Forty-eight percent of the WVU’s Match cohort will stay in West Virginia to complete their residency training, a statistic that bodes well for them staying on to practice here after residency, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges that has data saying that more than 50 percent of physicians stay and practice where they complete residency.
The remainder of the matched students are spread across 22 states, from California to New Jersey.
Fifty percent of the cohort will enter primary care fields in the areas of internal medicine, family medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics.
The top three specialties are internal medicine, family medicine and general surgery.
The Class of 2025 boasts an impressive roster of 12 MATTER students – students whose high scores and selected specialties allowed them to graduate in three years and enter residency at WVU early, thereby saving tuition dollars and time.
The graduating medical school class also features ten rural scholars who will enter the fields of family medicine or internal medicine upon completing their residency.
The WVU School of Medicine offers the most graduate medical education offerings in the state. With 82 residency training programs, 50 of which are the only ones of their kind offered within West Virginia, WVU attracts many applicants from schools across the country.
The incoming class of residents will begin their training in July.
