Nursing senior selected for 2022 Homecoming Court

Olivia Steeley, a senior School of Nursing student, has been selected as a candidate for the 2022 West Virginia University Homecoming Royalty Court.

Steeley, along with eight other students, will vie for the title of 2022 Homecoming Royalty during the two-day voting period, Oct. 25 and 26.

“Being on Homecoming Court allows me to represent and bring attention to my favorite student organizations and the School of Nursing,” Steeley said. “I hope to inspire future nursing students to get involved on campus, as my involvement with Changing Health Attitudes and Actions to Recreate Girls (CHAARG), Alpha Xi Delta and the WVU Student Nurses’ Association has provided me with fantastic opportunities, and even better friendships.”

Steeley explained that she is excited to use the Homecoming Court platform to promote public health through her campaign and be able to make connections with her peers throughout the week.

“The School of Nursing provides many opportunities to make a difference in the community, from hands-on clinical experience to community service opportunities, there is always a way to get involved,” Steeley said. “We are a very close-knit group and this program has given me lifelong friends. I also love our clinical rotations and am so grateful to learn in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

“I knew in high school that I wanted to attend a large university associated with a strong hospital network. When I initially visited campus, I loved that the School of Nursing had the resources of a large university, while having the feel of a smaller school. The David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety experiences at WVU were above and beyond the other nursing program faculties I toured. I truly fell in love with Ruby Memorial Hospital and I knew this is where I wanted to learn through my clinical rotations, which is why I chose the WVU School of Nursing.”

After graduation, Steeley plans to pursue critical care as a registered nurse in the Morgantown or Pittsburgh area.

Steeley, a native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, served as founding president of CHAARG for two years while also involved with Alpha Xi Delta, WVU Student Nurses’ Association, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Honors Foundation Program and Honors Hall Council. She is the recipient of the Rotary Club of Greensburg’s Scholastic Achievement Award, Court Appointed Special Advocates Westmoreland’s Youth Leadership Award and the Tribune Review’s Outstanding Young Citizen Award. Steeley’s Homecoming Court selection is sponsored by CHAARG.

All candidates will participate in the Homecoming Parade, which will take place on High Street Friday, Oct. 28 The parade is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

WVU’s Homecoming Royalty will be crowded during the halftime ceremony at the football game against Texas Christian University Saturday, Oct. 29, at Milan Puskar Stadium.
