Nursing students support annual WVU Cancer Breast Cancer Survivor Walk

Nursing students (pictured from left) Ella Tingler, Aiden Slusser and Olivia Warner volunteered during the annual WVU Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Survivor Walk.

Several WVU School of Nursing students volunteered during the annual WVU Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Survivor Walk on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Ruby Amphitheater at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park.

The walk is a community event that recognizes cancer survivors and their families, while providing an opportunity for education and fellowship.

Prior to the event, the WVU School of Nursing volunteers walked the one-mile trail to set up pink decorations for the participants. During the event, nursing students helped register the survivors and other student volunteers registered the supporters.

Volunteers distributed souvenirs to the attendees, including pom poms and fun items to wear during the walk. After the event, the volunteers also assisted with clean up.

"I wanted to support this event as I have always wanted to attend a breast cancer walk, but have never been given the opportunity to," said Olivia Warner. "I figured this would be a great opportunity to not only attend a breast cancer survivor event, but to help out the community as well."

She added, "I really enjoyed seeing all the smiling faces of the survivors and the great support systems they each had. I did not meet a single person who seemed upset or sad that day, but instead I was met with so much happiness."
