Relay for Life of Mon County and WVU looking for volunteers to help raise money for American Cancer Society

The Relay for Life of Mon County and West Virginia University is looking for community members to create teams and volunteer for its annual event on Friday, April 14, from 6 p.m. – midnight at the WVU Shell Building located at 1501 University Avenue in Morgantown.

This annual event is a partnership with the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research, help families gain access to the information and tools they need to reduce their risk of cancer and provide access to lifesaving screenings and treatments.

Event coordinators are looking for community members to create teams to participate in this year’s event. Team members will take turns walking around a track lined with luminaria bags, and will have the opportunity to cheer for local cancer survivors while they participate in the first lap of the day. Caregivers of cancer patients will then be invited to walk along with the survivors. As it gets dark, volunteers will light the luminaria bags surrounding the track in a memorable luminaria ceremony.

To create a team and volunteer for the annual Relay for Life of Mon County and WVU event, visit relayforlife.org/wvuwv and click ‘Join This Relay.’ Interested volunteers can then create an account on the Relay for Life website before creating their team and inviting other community members to join their team.

By creating a team for this event, community members will be hosting games and raising money to meet the fundraising goal of $45,000. Teams may also separately fundraise for the event and be in the running for a grand prize. Team members are required to pay a $15 registration fee that will contribute to the overall funds raised from the event.

The theme for this year’s event is “Pirates of the Cure-ibbean.” Participants are encouraged to dress up and plan their games accordingly. Any questions regarding the event can be emailed to wvurelayforlife@gmail.com.
