Schaefer and Hayanga inducted as Society of Critical Care Medicine fellows

The Society of Critical Care Medicine inducted Gregory Schaefer, D.O., FACS, FCCM, and J. W. Awori Hayanga, M.D., MPH, FACS, FRCS, FCCP, FCCM as fellows in the American College of Critical Care Medicine on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024.

This honor recognizes the outstanding contributions of critical care providers in the area of patient care, research and education. Drs. Schaefer and Hayanga were among 94 new fellows from across the globe who were recognized this year for their diligent commitment to excellence in critical care.

Schaefer is a professor in the Department of Surgery and serves as the medical director of Surgical Critical Care. He is a contributing author to textbooks for both fundamentals of critical care support and surgical fundamentals of critical care support.

Hayanga is a professor and vice chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He also directs the ECMO program in WVU Medicine’s Heart and Vascular Institute.
