Senior nursing student selected as Mountaineer of Distinction finalist

Greta Schmidt, a WVU School of Nursing senior and president of the Student Nurses' Association, has been selected as a finalist for the Mountaineer of Distinction Award, which is one of WVU's highest student honors.

"Being selected as a finalist for the Mountaineer of Distinction Award is such an incredible honor,” said Schmidt, of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. “WVU has shaped me not only as a nursing student but as a person, teaching me what it truly means to serve others with compassion and resilience. To be recognized reminds me how special this community is and how proud I am to represent the School of Nursing and West Virginia University."

An Honors College Foundation Scholar, Schmidt is a volunteer with Project MUSHROOM and the Rosenbaum Family House. She is also a member of the WVU Choir.

She has been a lifeguard at both the Cranberry Township Waterpark and the WVU Student Recreation Center and is a recipient of the American Red Cross Lifesavers Award.

The Mountaineer of Distinction Award recognizes seniors who exemplify leadership, service, academic excellence, and Mountaineer spirit. There are 10 finalists out of 75 applicants this season.

The winners will be announced during halftime at the Nov. 8 WVU football game.
