WVU and Oman’s National University highlight global accreditation success at international conference

Christopher Martin, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the West Virginia University schools of medicine and public health and director of global engagement at the WVU Health Sciences Center, recently presented a collaborative success story on medical education at an international conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

His presentation, “WFME Recognized Accreditation of an MD Program: The Story of a Successful Tripartite Collaboration,” showcased the work of West Virginia University, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the National University of Science and Technology in Oman, Oman’s Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education and Türkiye’s TEPDAD, an agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education.

The partnership led to Oman’s first WFME-recognized accreditation for a medical curriculum, achieved through a transparent, inclusive and data-driven process. WVU served as the academic partner, supporting curriculum reform, faculty development and the implementation of best practices in global accreditation.

The project aligned with Oman’s national healthcare workforce goals and demonstrated how academic institutions, regulators and accrediting bodies can work together to build sustainable frameworks for medical education excellence.

This collaboration serves as a model for international institutions seeking to enhance medical education quality and global mobility for graduates. WVU remains committed to partnerships that support educational innovation and improved health outcomes around the world.
