WVU Nursing day camp gives high schoolers a glimpse of the nursing profession

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University School of Nursing recently hosted its first ever Summer Day Camp, offering nearly 40 prospective students and their families the opportunity to learn more about nursing school and a career as a nurse.

The free, one-day event offered students and their families an information session, a mock lecture and hands-on learning opportunities at the West Virginia Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) Center. Lunch and t-shirts were also provided.

“We wanted to offer this event as an opportunity for high school students to learn more about the WVU School of Nursing,” said Phillip Engelkemier, College Recruitment Specialist. “The mock lecture and hands-on activities gave students a chance to see what a day in the life of a nursing student is like.”

Students were able to meet Dr. Brad Phillips, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs; Dr. Tina Antill Keener, Director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program; and Andrea Bailey, Director of Nursing Simulation. Student ambassador Aiden Slusser also attended the event, offering attendees insight from a current student’s perspective.
