WVU School of Nursing celebrates Jenab Lectureship, student awards and Sigma inductees

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — At a special ceremony April 20, the WVU School of Nursing celebrated the bi-annual Lorita D. Jenab Nursing Lectureship, as well as student awards for 2023 and the newest inductees of the Alpha Rho Chapter of the Sigma International Honor Society of Nursing.

This year marked the 15th bi-annual lectureship, which pays tribute to Dr. Lorita D. Jenab, who served as the second Dean of the School of Nursing for 24 years. When she retired in 1992, the lectureship was established to recognize her contributions to the School of Nursing and to the state of West Virginia.

This year’s speaker, Dr. Cynthia Clark, is a Professor Emeritus at Boise State University, and an award-winning professor, scholar, and author. As the founder of the Founder of Civility Matters, Dr. Clark is best known for her ground-breaking work on fostering civility and healthy work and learning environments around the globe. Her lecture centered on civility and the responsibility required to take leadership roles.

Student award recipients were recognized during the Jenab Lectureship. 

Student awards were presented at the event, including the following 2023 recipients:

  • PhD Award for Excellence: Kerry Drabish
  • DNP Award for Excellence: Melissa Fannon-Wisner
  • DNP Nurse Anesthetist Award for Excellence: Kristen Calebraugh
  • MSN Award for Excellence: Safiyyah Nomani
  • BSN Awards for Excellence:
    • Senior Student: Andrew Johnson
    • Junior Student: Jack McDade
    • Sophomore Student: Isabella Hayes
  • BS/BA to BSN Award for Excellence: Taylor Sergent
  • RN to BSN Award for Excellence: Clinton Maust
  • Dr. Patsy Hesen Haslam Public Health Nursing Award: Rachel Gobrecht
  • PhD Alumni Award for Leadership: Marian Reven
  • DNP Alumni Award for Leadership: Silvia Myndresku
  • MSN Alumni Award for Leadership: Allison Pettit
  • BSN Alumni Award for Leadership: Tahya Stewart
The newest inductees of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma were recognized during the Jenab Lecture.

Additionally at the event, the newest inductees of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma were recognized, including Ayodele Ayeko, Michael Bellisario, Kira Bircher, Skylar Blevins, Paige Brill, Brooke Fetterman, Elizabeth Gould, Lauren Gross, Olivia Groves, Megan Hardman, Marinna Heath, Matthew Hottle, Hannah Jack, Abigail Jeffers, Megan Johnson, Kristin Leep, Amber Mate, Jack McDade, Claire McMahon, Christopher Moats, Jayna Moore, Hallie Nemcik, Holly Perkins, Samantha Shingleton, Sophia Smith, Tiffany Sorgman, Allyson Ugland, Laura Vollmer, Macy Ward, Bridget Webb and Salamata Yoda.

The vision of Sigma is to connect and empower nursing leaders transforming global healthcare. The Sigma presentation was led by Amanda Edwards, president of the Alpha Rho Chapter.
