WVU School of Nursing partners with Lilly's Heart Outreach to aid flood victims

The West Virginia University School of Nursing has teamed up with Lilly’s Heart Outreach in Mercer County to provide crucial supplies to flood victims across Mercer and surrounding counties. Despite experiencing flooding damage to their own facility, Lilly’s Heart Outreach has remained steadfast in their mission, ensuring that essential supplies are delivered to those in need.

Lilly’s Heart Outreach, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals facing adversity, was significantly impacted by the recent floods. Their building sustained water damage, but rather than halting their efforts, the organization has found innovative ways to continue supporting the community. With the help of the WVU School of Nursing, they have been able to mobilize resources and work directly with local partners to reach flood survivors.

“We were devastated by the flood’s impact on our building, but our commitment to the community remains strong,” said Pastor Sherry Phillips. “We knew that the people of Mercer County and the surrounding areas needed us, so we quickly shifted gears to ensure that supplies, including food, clothing, hygiene products, and medical items, were distributed as quickly as possible.”

“Lilly’s Heart Outreach has been a lifeline for many in this community, and we are proud to partner with them in this time of need,” said Dr. Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the WVU School of Nursing.

As floodwaters recede, both the WVU School of Nursing and Lilly’s Heart Outreach are committed to providing ongoing support and ensuring that the long-term recovery process is as smooth as possible for those affected.

Supplies from the WVU School of Nursing were made possible thanks to support from Natalie Bush, a WVU School of Nursing alum. Donations supporting community engagement efforts at the WVU School of Nursing are awarded via the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
