WVU School of Nursing recruitment specialist elected president of WVACRAO

Phillip Engelkemier, a West Virginia University School of Nursing college recruitment specialist, has been elected President of the West Virginia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to helping provide college exploration opportunities for students in West Virginia.

In 2016, Engelkemier began his career in higher education as a college recruitment specialist. Two years later, he was asked to join the WVACRAO committee where he discovered his passion for helping students find their place.

This year, Engelkemier was elected president of WVACRAO at the yearly conference. He plans to continue growth and active engagement from within by planning more college fairs throughout West Virginia and reaching out to as many high school students as possible.

“We have a lot of first-generation students in West Virginia, so a lot of what I do is just try to make all of it make sense — from scheduling a college campus visit to submitting your application, how to submit transcripts, the importance of still taking an ACT or SAT, things like that,” Engelkemier said.

He also encourages high school students in the state to consider secondary education:

“If you're a West Virginia high school student, regardless of the year, please consider attending a post-secondary institution.”
