WVU School of Nursing’s Family Feud event raises $1,900 for homeless outreach efforts

Survey Says! — The West Virginia University Student Nurses Association’s Family Feud event was a huge success, welcoming more than 150 attendees and raising $1,900 for MUSHROOM (Multidisciplinary UnSheltered Homeless Relief Outreach Of Morgantown).

“To see the auditorium full last night, and a line out the door to get in, was one of the greatest things to see,” said event organizer Andrew Johnson, a junior in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. “It surpassed every hope/expectation that I had for the show.”

WVU School of Nursing professors faced off—Family Feud style—by answering questions from the popular television show, as well as School of Nursing-related questions April 7 in the Okey Patteson Auditorium in the Health Sciences Center.

The professors selected the themes “The Geriatrics” and “The Funny Pharm” for their teams and they dressed the part! The Geriatrics included Brad Phillips, Beth Stiles, Tonya Payerchin, Heather ONeal, Amy Miner, Tina Keener and Tanya Rogers. The Funny Pharm included Jo Watson, Stacy Huber, Beth Minchau, Stacy Russell, Andrea Bailey, Derrick Conner and Sue McKenrick.

“I want to thank everyone who was there last night for making the event so amazing,” Johnson said. “To the professors who played, made costumes, and cracked us up the whole night; they were the stars of the evening.”

Johnson added, “To all the friends, families, and faculty who came to support the professors and MUSHROOM, I am so grateful for your contributions of time, money, and support. And to all the students who came and packed the auditorium full of people, it could not have been done without you guys showing up and showing your support. Thank you to everyone who came!”

Area businesses also supported the effort, including a $300 donation from Target, a $300 donation from WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial Hospital, as well as $25 gift cards from both Kegler’s and Suburban Lanes for raffle prizes.

Johnson also extended a special thanks to Coach Brown and his assistant Lori for donating a signed, game used football and WVU football hat, as well as President Gee and his assistant Bonnie, who donated a signed bowtie for raffle prizes, and Jo Watson, Director of the BSN program, who donated two certificates with a $75 value to The Wow! Factory.

“Our donors were extremely generous, and we are grateful for all the donations, as our raffle raised a lot of money!” Johnson said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit MUSHROOM, a program that brings together medical, nursing, dental, social work and other health professional volunteers to offer folks experiencing homelessness basic care, such as food, water, clothing and basic medical intervention.

“To be able to support MUSHROOM like this was absolutely amazing, and by far my favorite experience here at WVU thus far,” Johnson said. “But I feel like it goes much further than that. It shows that we, as nursing students and faculty, are fully aware that the principles of caring and compassion that we share as nurses (and future nurses) spreads far beyond the hospital or clinic setting.

“It spreads out to our entire community; to wherever someone in need can be found. It shows that anyone in need can be helped by a nurse, and the fact that we packed the house last night for the individuals in our community that need our help the most shows how far us nurses and nursing students are willing to go to help... all the way!”
