MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University School of Nursing students volunteered Oct. 5 at the 2022 Veterans Golf Classic, offering assistance with vital signs, registration and raffle tickets.

The event, hosted at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown, benefitted Operation Welcome Home, a local non-profit dedicated to helping veterans and their families in North Central West Virginia. Since 2012, OWH has been working to provide meaningful, life-changing resources to the local veteran community.

The WVU School of Nursing also served as a sponsor of the event, thanks to coordination by Professor Emeritus Dr. Sandra "Sam" Cotton.

"If anyone has ever put on an event, they understand the success of the event hinges on the volunteers," said Tiffany Summerlin, Executive Director of Operation Welcome Home. "I was blown away by the response of community members who came out of the woodwork to support the Veterans Golf Classic this year. With this being my first year organizing the event, there were many unknowns. Estimating volunteer need was probably the greatest variable, so I was very grateful to have the WVU School of Nursing students sign up to participate."

Summerlin said nursing students helped to welcome golfers and direct them to registration, provided directions to golfers to find their carts, sold raffle tickets, sold 50/50 tickets, assessed vitals sigs and more.

"The students arrived on time and were eager to help in whatever capacity was needed," Summerlin added."
