WVU School of Pharmacy Achieves Strong 2025 Residency Match Results, Surpassing National Average

As numerous West Virginia University School of Pharmacy graduates and alumni prepare to begin their residency programs next month, the School is proud to share the results of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) 2025 residency match results.

This year, 31 WVU PharmD graduates and alumni participated in the national residency match process. Of those, 26 secured PGY1 placements which gave WVU School of Pharmacy students a rate that is six percentage points above the national average for Schools. Two additional graduates secured PGY1 residencies following the match, bringing the School’s overall PGY1 placement rate to 88%.

In addition, all seven WVU pharmacy alumni who applied for post-graduate year two (PGY2) specialized residency programs matched successfully.

“These results speak volumes about the quality of our program and the caliber of our students,” said Dr. William Petros, dean of the WVU School of Pharmacy. “Matching above the national average reflects the exceptional training and commitment our students bring to their professional development.”

Graduates and alumni residents will serve in health facilities in 10 states, underscoring the national reach of WVU’s program. Sites include health facilities in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Delaware.

Notable placements include WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals, the University of Virginia Health System, Humana, AdventHealth Orlando, the University of North Carolina Medical Center, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), Allegheny General Hospital, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Kentucky Healthcare.

While WVU School of Pharmacy graduates are considered practice-ready, many opt to pursue residencies to gain accelerated specialized training in areas such as infectious diseases, oncology, ambulatory care and critical care.

Pharmacy Residency Match Day is part of a national process coordinated by ASHP that helps candidates and institutions find optimal matches through a competitive system similar to those used in medicine, dentistry, psychology, and other health professions.

The WVU School of Pharmacy extends congratulations to all residency match participants and looks forward to the impact they will make in advancing pharmacy practice and patient care.
