Effective Aug. 1, the WVU Health System Medical Group (SMG) took over the management and provider staffing of the Emergency Department (ED) at WVU Medicine Grant Memorial Hospital (GMH); the service had formerly been covered by an external staffing company.

According to John Sylvia, president and CEO at GMH, “this collaboration enhances our ability to deliver cohesive, high-quality emergency care to the community and brings WVU Medicine providers to service the residents of Grant and surrounding counties.”

“Bringing together providers across communities and specialties to serve the people of West Virginia and beyond is what SMG is all about,” Thomas Marshall, MD, president of SMG, added.

The SMG formed in 2021 and has since grown to more than 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers. Caregivers affiliated with the group practice in all 25 WVU Medicine hospitals and clinics. The group’s physicians serve in a variety of specialties and subspecialties – from primary care to advanced specialty care – and work in tandem with the WVU faculty practice plan.
