The West Virginia University School of Public Health will celebrate its 10-year anniversary October 25-28 with a series of special events on the WVU Health Sciences campus. All WVU students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. All events are free and open to the public.
The school will kick off the celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 10:30 a.m. in the Hostler Auditorium with opening remarks from Dr. Jeff Coben, dean of the School of Public Health; Gordon Gee, WVU president; Dr. Clay Marsh, chancellor and executive dean for WVU Health Sciences; Laura Magaña, president and CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health; and Jim Kaufman, president of the West Virginia Hospital Association.
Dr. Coben will then moderate a panel discussion, “Current Trends and Issues in Public Health and Healthcare,” that will include J. Thomas Jones, WVU Board of Governors chairman, as well as Gee, Marsh, Magaña and Kaufman. At the conclusion of the panel, the school will host a lunch, open to all panelists and attendees.
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. "Careers Through the Years: School of Public Health Distinguished Alumni," will feature several accomplished alumni who will share about their career paths and how the School of Public Health shaped their journeys.
On Thursday, Oct. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the school will host “Cheers to 10 Years: Public Health is Sweet!” –an ice cream social paired with trivia, apparel giveaways and other fun activities in the Pylons Lobby of the Health Sciences Center.
The School will conclude the celebration on Friday, Oct. 28, at 11:30 a.m. with a panel featuring leaders from across various sectors. Moderated by April Kaull, executive director of communications for WVU, the panel discussion, “Leadership in Crisis: Lessons Learned from a Pandemic,” features Dr. Coben; Dr. Marsh; Dr. Lee Smith, Monongalia County Health Department Officer; Bill Crouch, Cabinet secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources; and Dr. Margaret Kitt, retired deputy director for Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
