In conjunction with NPHW’s daily theme of Violence Prevention, the WVU School of Public Health will host a Gun Violence Prevention Forum. Both in person and virtual formats will be offered.
National data show gun-related deaths are on the rise. In 2020, the U.S. was home to 19,384 homicides and 24,292 suicides involving guns. Those numbers are the highest documented levels in a decade.
Moderated by Interim Dean Erik Carlton, the forum will feature:
- Jeff Daniels, Ph.D., professor, WVU College of Applied Human Sciences
- Greg Vecchi, Ph.D., professor, Keiser University and former chief of FBI Behavioral Science unit
- Dan Semenza, Ph.D., director, Interpersonal Violence Research in the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center, Rutgers University
Drs. Vecchi and Daniels, authors of Fatal Grievances: Forecasting and Preventing Active Killer Threats in School, Campus, and Workplace Settings, will discuss their proactive view of active killer threat management and resolution to prevent attacks before they occur.
Dr. Semenza will speak to the work they are doing broadly across several different types of gun violence and how this mirrors the broader public health approach to addressing gun violence.
About National Public Health Week:
During the first full week of April each year, the American Public Health Association brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week (NPHW). NPHW is an important time, dedicated to recognizing the contributions of public health and highlighting issues that are important to improving our nation's health.
