“This clinic is important because gender diverse young people face significant health disparities compared to cisgender peers and that includes higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicide attempt.”
This year's Diversity Week will take place October 9-14, 2022.
We invite the Health Sciences community joined the entire West Virginia University campus to promote celebration, education and understanding of different identities and experiences present on our campuses.
Health Sciences is hosting a number of events in conjunction with Diversity Week.
You can also learn more about our values, our commitment, our plan and our actions on our Health Sciences Diversity site. Take action by registering for ongoing DEI training; by learning more about Community & Campus Resources; or by joining a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee.

“Overall health care is much better if you have diverse people with diversity awareness. If we’re aware of issues and problems, it can lead to better health care for our patients.”
“If I am part of a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, I feel that I am practicing my own principles and I am contributing to make others’ lives a little better.”
“As a first-generation college student, having a welcoming and inclusive environment gave me the courage to share my own voice and perspective. The inclusion I felt on campus also gave me the space to come out as a member of the LGBTQA+ community.”
“It is important for students to experience a diverse patient pool in order to develop cultural competence in a safe environment. Adding individuals from varying cultural backgrounds will provide better perspective on unique healthcare related experiences and improved outcomes for future patients.”
The Health Sciences community is invited to participate in a social media campaign, #IAmWVUHealth, to celebrate and showcase the diverse backgrounds throughout the Health Sciences campuses.
