Risk Management
The Risk Management team works closely with health care providers to handle and monitor medical malpractice claims. They:
Collect information and submit claims to the WV Board of Risk and Insurance Management and AIG Claims Services.
Track and report costs related to each claim.
Verify accounting details for deductible amounts and maintain a detailed claims database with case status and named defendants.
Respond to insurance inquiries for WVU health care providers.
The team also provides education and training on topics such as risk management and HIPAA compliance for Health Sciences Center (HSC) faculty and staff.
If a provider receives a subpoena, the team assists by contacting the provider, gathering necessary information, and helping coordinate testimony.
HSC Privacy Office
The HSC Privacy Office oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies that protect patient health information in accordance with federal and state privacy laws.
Their mission is to ensure understanding and compliance with:
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rules
The HITECH Act provisions
Applicable West Virginia privacy and security laws
As a hybrid covered entity under HIPAA, West Virginia University (WVU) designates specific health care components within the HSC that must comply with these privacy standards.
The team also collaborates closely with WVU Hospitals, the WVU Medical Corporation, and the WVU Dental Corporation. Together, these organizations form an Organized Health Care Arrangement (OHCA) to support shared educational and clinical research efforts.
