Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Study Abroad Travel Award
Introduction
Global Engagement at the Health Sciences Center is pleased to announce the availability of a competitive grant opportunity for students currently enrolled in degree
programs within the Health Sciences Center. The purpose of these awards is to support expenses related to participation in global health rotations.
Eligibility
These awards will utilize a self-nomination process and are open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate full-time student in good standing within the WVU Health Sciences Center. Please note that in no instance will a student be awarded more than one award, nor be considered competitively in subsequent years of study after having received an award. Up to five (5) awards of $1,000.00 each are available for this academic year. Please note that the selection process is coordinated through Global Engagement and will reflect the selection criteria listed below.
Selection Criteria
All applicants must demonstrate that they have satisfactorily met the following selection criteria. The selection criteria to be reviewed by the Global Engagment Award Committee includes:
- Academic excellence
- Demonstrated leadership
- Potential and/or evidence of impact of work
- Commitment to improving and advancing global health within the Health Sciences Preference will be given to students from programs currently considered to be relatively underrepresented in global health activities.
Application Requirements
All applicants are required to submit a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. A completed application will include the following items and abide by the rules and requirements provided below (e.g., 12-point font and 1 inch margins):
- A curriculum vitae (CV)A statement—one page maximum with 12-point font and 1 inch margins—that includes the academic and professional background of the applicant, specific interests and career goals, and a summary of how the applicant will use the scholarship if selected.
- Two recommendations—submitted electronically by the recommenders — from individuals familiar with the academic performance and achievements of the applicant, as well as actual and/or potential professional impact on their field of study.
- One recommendation must be from a faculty member within the department where the applicant is receiving instruction.
- A summary of purpose for studying abroad in a target country.
Submission Requirements
Completed applications should be submitted electronically to the Global Engagement Executive Assistant Cynthia Stankos.
Submissions must be received by the close of business (5 p.m.) Friday, January 31, 2025.

Complete applications will be reviewed by the Global Engagment Award Committee. Recipients of the Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Study Abroad Travel Award will be announced by February 28, 2025.
