At West Virginia University Health Sciences, the health and well-being of West Virginians is at the heart of everything we do. As a land-grant institution, we’re committed to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to deliver person-centered care through teamwork and collaboration.

The Office of Interprofessional Education (IPE) helps make that happen. Its mission is to prepare students to work together across health disciplines, and its vision is to improve holistic, person-centered care through purposeful, team-based learning experiences.

Established in 2013, the Office of Interprofessional Education has developed a three-phase approach for students to establish proficiency in interprofessional care.

  • First phase: Didactic component, which introduces students to the concept of interprofessional education

  • Second and Third phase: Simulation and clinical practice experiences, respectively, which allow students to apply their didactic foundation to patient care.

WVU’s Health Sciences Campus in Morgantown provides an ideal environment for collaboration. With the state’s largest concentration of healthcare, research, and health professions programs all in one place, students, faculty, and staff have daily opportunities to learn with, from, and about each other. This strong foundation has helped WVU become a national model for interprofessional education.

Students across multiple programs take part in hands-on learning—both in the classroom and through real-world experiences—that build teamwork and communication skills.

By learning to work across disciplines, WVU students graduate ready to join healthcare teams that provide stronger, more connected care for patients and communities. This teamwork-based approach helps students build key interprofessional skills in values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork.
