Clay's Purpose — May 2022

A monthly letter from Clay Marsh, Chancellor and Executive Dean, WVU Health Sciences

Clay's Purpose — May 2022

It is a special time of year again – commencement at West Virginia University!

This past weekend was a tribute to our students, their families and to all at the university who have worked so hard to ensure that our graduates are prepared to take the next steps in their journeys. It is a time of celebration as old doors close and new doors open.

This is an important and special milestone as our graduates step into new experiences – academically, personally, emotionally and socially. While there may be hesitation in navigating unknowns, in these moments of uncertainty, I hope they will surround themselves with a community of peers, professionals, friends and the greater Mountaineer family.

We have a purpose greater than ourselves. In his commencement address at Howard University, the late Chadwick Boseman said:

“Purpose is an essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill. Whatever you choose for a career path, remember, the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”

I think our foundational purpose is to serve humanity by bringing hope, safety, harmony and love to the people we touch and to the places we live. To let the light that is within all of us shine brightly.

To our new graduates, you are always part of the WVU family, and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Shine brightly Class of 2022, and may country roads always bring you home.
