Four faculty present at National League for Nursing Research Conference

Four members of the WVU School of Nursing faculty recently presented at the National League for Nursing Research Conference held in Washington, D.C., including Amanda Edwards, Dr. Stacy Huber, Dr. Tina Antill Keener and Tonya Thompson.

“The NLN Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC) was a great learning and networking opportunity,” said Antill Keener, assistant professor with the WVU School of Nursing. “The chance to engage with nurse educators from various universities and colleges inspired and invigorated us and reinforced the great work accomplished at WVU SON.”

Antill Keener and Thompson presented their team’s work, including Drs. Kesheng Wang and Ubolrat “Diu” Piamjariyakul, “Reducing Stress and Improving Self-Compassion of Nursing Students During a Pandemic.” The presentation shared the findings of an emotional-regulation intervention for senior-level nursing students.

“We were happy to find the audience engaged,” Antill Keener said. “They asked many questions and contacted us following the presentation.”

Edwards, Huber and Thompson presented two podium presentations related to program evaluation for the Clinical Assistant (CA) Program. The CA program is a collaborative effort of undergraduate faculty members, including the presenters along with Dr. Alexis Hicks, Joanne Watson and Amber Ziese. The CA program involves placing senior-level students in the clinical setting to assist the clinical instructors as they instruct sophomore-level students.

“Our first presentation at the NLN conference provided evidence of the CA program's benefits to the development of senior-level students' leadership skills, including delegation, teamwork, and communication,” Huber said. “Our second presentation was offered to provide evidence of the CA program's effectiveness in introducing students to the role and responsibility of the clinical nurse educator.”

Dr. Heather Carter-Templeton, Chair of the Adult Health Department, shared her pride and gratitude for the excellent representation at the conference by WVU School of Nursing faculty.

“We are thrilled to have these faculty members represent us at this conference,” Carter-Templeton said. “Their innovative work clearly demonstrates forward thinking and it is evident that they are committed to advancing nursing education research.”
