WVU Eastern Campus announces research poster winners
WVU School of Medicine's Eastern Campus held its seventh annual Faculty Development and Research Symposium March 31 through April 1. The event is a continuing education activity for faculty physicians, medical residents and medical students, as well as an opportunity for participants to showcase medical research projects in the Eastern Panhandle area.
With more than 30 research posters submitted, a third year medical student and her faculty sponsor created the poster judged to be the competition winner. First place was presented to Sara J. Chowdhury and her faculty sponsor, Sarah Moerschel, M.D. With a project titled “Meenu Apa,” which means Mother Nature in Bangladesh, their project encouraged education about menstruation for both genders with a goal of “fighting the stigma of menstruation.”
Second prize was awarded to third year medical student Morgan Johnson, with her co-authors, Nicole Cornell, M.S., CRCC; Khumara Huseynova, M.D.; William Krantz, M.D.; Chris Bailey, D.O.; and Uzer Khan, M.D. Their poster was titled, “Description of Blunt Aortic Injuries Managed in a Rural Trauma Center,” and reviewed blunt aortic trauma management, the second leading cause of death in trauma patients.
Family resident physician, Sharada Bahrani, M.D. and co-authors, Ryan Miller, M.D. and Brian Schleter, M.D., were awarded third prize for their poster titled, “Urgent Care if You Dare,” which examined whether patients who seek medical care regularly at Urgent Care, without annual visits to a primary care physician, participate in annual health tests including breast cancer screening, lipid screenings and colonoscopies.
In addition to the research poster competition, there were several continuing education classes presented. More than 50 medical professionals attended the two-day event sponsored by the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Campus.
