The West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Rural Family Medicine residency program in Harpers Ferry is excited to announce six newly-matched fourth-year medical students to the program.

Rural Family Medicine welcomes the following students to the incoming Class of 2026.

  • Emily Barsley from Louisiana State University,
  • Caroline Benzel from the University of Maryland School of Medicine,
  • Ella Bushman, a Rural Scholar from the West Virginia University School of Medicine – Eastern Campus,
  • Derek Hodges from the St. George’s School of Medicine,
  • Maria Kleimann Sanchez from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and
  •  Sharmaine Lewis from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

“We are excited to once again welcome a new class of young medical professionals to the Rural Family Medicine program,” said residency program director Angela Cherry, M.D. “I look forward to working closely with each one of them during their next three years with us at the School of Medicine.”

This three-year residency program educates physicians in the practice of full-spectrum family medicine in a unique rural setting. The new residents will begin their residency in July and will graduate from the program in July 2026.

Residents of the program practice primarily at Harpers Ferry Family Medicine, a clinic that sees more than 30,000 patient visits per year. Residents also do inpatient rotations at Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, additional training at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and inpatient pediatrics rotations at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
